Ryan Newman in the no.12 Alltel/Mobil 1 Ford was the Raybestos® Rookie Of The Race t Pocono.
"That's our third fifth place finish in a row. That's pretty good but we need to win one of these. That is what's important. This is a good run for us all day in the Alltel/Mobil 1 Ford. We fought for track position there and had a couple good pit stops. We were a top-five car all day and that's about all you can ask for."
THIS IS YOUR THIRD TOP FIVE IN A ROW. ARE YOU GOING TO CHANGE THAT WITH A WIN NEXT WEEK?
"We're going to try. We had a great run today in the Alltel Ford. We struggled there at the start and had to fall back to ninth on that first pit stop because of track position, but fought our way back. The guys did an awesome job in the pits. The car was a top-five car all day and we showed that there at the end."
DID YOU HAVE A CHANCE OF CATCHING DALE JARRETT AT THE END OF THE RACE FOR FOURTH POSITION?
"I caught him I just couldn't do anything with him. It's so tough, it's so equal. It's just one of those things."
THIS RACE TOOK OVER SIX HOURS TO COMPLETE. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN INVOLVED IN A RACE LIKE THIS?
"Weddings sometime take that long, you know, but that's about it. It was definitely long and I'm definitely tired but I guess I have reason to be."
HOW HARD WAS IT TO STAY FOCUSED WITH THE DELAYS?
"You just take it as it is, I mean, it's the same for everybody. You've just got to do what your job is and that's what I did."
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE'S CHEVROLET, FINSIHED 15TH.
"A long day but, big picture, looking at our goals at the beginning of the season we wanted to finish in the top-15 and we did that today. I'm a little dumfounded as to why we weren't more of a threat all day long. We had some cautions not work out in our direction on some pit strategy and different stuff there. Still we were a lot faster here six weeks ago and we were all a little dumfounded why we weren't like that today."
MENTALLY HOW DIFFICULT WAS THE RACE TODAY?
"It's a real hard track mentally. You get real frustrated in traffic and you get aero tight and track position is important and all that. You only really have one opportunity to pass around the track and that's turn one. It was like that in the spring but we just had a better car and we could pass people, just a little slower today."
DID THE TRACK CHANGE FROM THE TIME THE RACE STARTED UNTIL IT FINISHED?
"It really didn't change until the sun went down here in the last 50 laps. It got real tight for us."
SELECTED QUOTES FROM NEWMAN POST RACE PRESS CONFERENCE:
"The biggest thing I think was that the track changed a little bit. It went from cool and humid to just plain humid. It was raining and then it got warm again and then cooled off later here tonight. I think that was the biggest change and drawing it out made it definitely a physical race for me anyway."
HOW WAS YOUR VISIBILITY IN THE CLOSING LAPS?
"I've driven on dirt before so it doesn't really care how dark it is when you've got your shield full of mud. You can see through just about anything as long as you've got your mind on it and you want to."
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT CARRYING THE BANNER AS ONE OF THE YOUNG DRIVERS IN WINSTON CUP RACING?
"Last week Ward Burton won and this week it's Bill Elliott. Next week it could be anybody. It's just close. Without a doubt it's good to be considered part of the up and coming NASCAR racers. To me it doesn't really matter. I race as hard as I can every lap no matter how old I am or how old the guy is next to me and I'm sure everybody else says the same thing."
