Overview of pre-race activities

Motorsport.com art director Eric Gilbert presents the photos that he actually uses as screen savers (and that he has actually shot, also).

Once in a while, I do this little piece called "Latest picture on my screen saver" on my personal facebook page. I thought you might enjoy these. This is part 1, and will post more of these in the future on Motorsport.com.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Daytona 500, 2012-02-27: Top of the world.

Shooting the Daytona 500 from atop the Sprint Tower rooftop, one can easily feels to be at the top of the world, as the view up there is breathtaking. The world below seems abstract, almost movie-like. From a photography perspective, things get even more interesting as many angles are possible, even an ultra wide one, such as in this photo. Coupled with a full frame camera, a 15mm fisheye lens will give the photographer the perfect 'scene setter' shot as the whole Daytona International Speedway fits in one single photo.

I've shot this photo dozens of time and for some reason, I always find the result to be different every time. Most likely it's because of the constantly changing sky and the different light. And with this year's clouds patterns that were changing every minute and a 6-7 PM pre-race time, the scene was even more 'different' (surreal, even) than usual.
