Carl Edwards, driver of the No. 99 Dish Network Ford Fusion, will be trying to make it two straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victories after Monday's win in California. Edwards held a Q&A session behind his hauler Friday morning at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to talk about his chances.
THAT WIN LAST WEEK HAD TO PUT A LITTLE SPRING IN THE STEP OF YOUR TEAM, DIDN'T IT? "Yeah, it's good. To come out of the box and run really well like that, and to back up our testing and win a race right off the bat, that feels good. I know last year when Matt won that race, that boosted us with just Matt winning that thing and having somebody at Roush Fenway getting a win that early is good, so I hope it's good for the whole team."
WHAT ABOUT THE RACE THIS WEEKEND? "I think it's gonna be a really good race. I think the temperatures are gonna be up. It's gonna be a slick, hot, fast race, which is gonna be fun. These cars were so fast here in testing. We were really hauling the mail and they're a little bit hard to drive, so I think the line is gonna be pretty wide open. I think there will be people running all over the race track and it'll be pretty good."
HOW MUCH ARE YOU CONSCIOUS OF TAKING CARE OF THE TIRES WITH THE SPEED YOU'RE CARRYING? "You always want to make sure that the tires are gonna last. We'll watch that real closely in practice for the first run. I'm not sure that we had any big tire issues in testing, so the biggest thing will be to just keep an eye on it."
WHO IS YOUR MAIN COMPETITION THIS WEEKEND? "I don't know who is gonna be strong. I would have never imagined Jimmie and Jeff being so strong at California after the test, so it's been long enough that people have been able to work on their stuff. I think Matt is really good. All of the Roush Fenway cars are really good, so you can't tell. It's been too long because people have had too much time to work on their cars."
WHAT ARE THE ODDS OF YOU ENDED JIMMIE'S STREAK HERE? "I think our odds are pretty good at being able to win here. If you look at the test, we were pretty good. Jimmie and those guys have some amazing way to just pull it out at the end and get wins, but, hopefully, we can be the guys to stop them. That's a pretty amazing streak though. To win that many times in a Sprint Cup car at one track is great. I'm not a big statistics guy. Everything has changed, but I tell you what, I think he's gonna be fast."
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO GET A WIN EARLY IN THE SEASON? "It's huge internally for everyone, myself included, just to get a win right off the bat. That feels really good. It kind of just lets you breathe a little bit and hopefully sets the tone for the season. Nothing is certain in this sport, so it's good to get a win right off the bat."
