Once again, rain prematurely ended Sprint Cup practice at Homestead.
30 minutes into the 55-minute session, rain hit the Southern Florida circuit and forced a red flag. Kyle Larson was fasted, putting down a 30.680 second lap (176.010mph). Kevin Harvick wasn't far behind, setting the pace for the title contenders.
Early in the practice, Casey Mears spun in Turn 2, which was later followed by A.J. Allmendinger making contact with the outside wall. The No. 47 team decided not to go to a backup car.
After 18 minutes of practice, chatter on the radio started to indicate that it was trying to rain. "Harvick has been the best in terms of mobility, moving around from top to bottom," No. 18 spotter Tony Hirschman told Kyle Busch, who timed in ninth.
Jeff Gordon was 15th and Martin Truex Jr. 19th. Truex complained that he had no drive off the corner, struggling to find the balance on the No. 78.
Only ten drivers ran ten consecutive laps, a list topped by Brad Keselowski. No other driver ran as many laps as the reigning series champion, who ended the session with 29 laps in the books.
