Kyle Larson wants to race at the Indy 500

Daytona Beach, Fla. – Kurt Busch has let it be known he wants to do the Double -- the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte and the Indianapolis 500 -- on the same day in May. And now Kyle Larson has raised his hand, showing interest in being the first driver to do so in a long time.

Driving the Target Chevrolet for Chip Ganassi Racing, Larson, 21, will start his rookie season of NASCAR Sprint Cup action in a few days, but he’s accustomed to racing and winning often, and indicates he’s always looking for new fields to try. In 2013, he raced 102 times and won 16 of them, so he knows what frenzied schedules are and is always ready for a challenge.

Speaking at Media Day in Daytona, Larson said, “I went to Indianapolis last year and I said to Chip (Ganassi) jokingly, ‘I’d like to (do the 500),’ and he said, ‘Let’s do it.’ Who knows, it is so tough to do with these schedules. No one has done it in quite a while, and if I could do it, I would be up for it.”

Although Larson has never driven an IndyCar, he longs to do so and hopes to try out Scott Dixon’s open-wheel car whenever the offer is made. “Being with Chip gives you an opportunity to drive different types of vehicles. I did get to race in the Rolex24 at Daytona, which is something I never thought I would get a chance to do, and now I hope I get a chance to run in the Indy500 someday. That would be awesome.”

Regarding Busch’s desire, Larson stated, “Kurt’s the outlaw, so I think it would be really cool if he could do that. He’s got a ton of talent, and I hope he can put something together, although I would like to be the next one to do it.” Larson foresees a long and successful career and whether in stock cars, sprint cars or Indy cars, he has the potential and the determination to succeed.
