Daytona Beach, Fla. - Kyle Busch was injured in a ten-car accident late in the going of the season-opening NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona international Speedway today.

Busch tapped the back of Erik Jones before careening through the grass of the first corner, slamming head-on into a concrete wall that was not protected by a SAFER Barrier. He climbed out of the car but soon realized he needed assistance as safety workers helped him to the ground. His right leg was stabilized as he was placed on a stretcher.

Busch bypassed the infield care center and was immediately transported to a local hospital via ambulance. He was fully conscious, but visibly in pain.

JGR confirms injury

According to an official release from the team, Busch has sustained a right lower leg compound fracture and left mid-foot fracture. A return date has not yet been determined. He is undergoing surgery on his right leg tonight. Matt Crafton has been named the replacement driver, which you can read HERE.

NASCAR statement

NASCAR released a statement, saying he "is awake and alert and undergoing treatment for a right leg injury." The also confirmed that he will not take part in the Daytona 500. With the indefinite suspension of brother Kurt Busch, tomorrow's Daytona 500 will be the first in 15 years without one of those brothers participating.
