All-day rain on Friday washed out NASCAR Sprint Cup Series practice and qualifying at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. As a result, the starting line-up for Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 will be based on the 2012 car owners’ points with Brad Keselowski and Clint Bowyer occupying the front row with Daytona 500 winner Jimmie Johnson and Kasey Kahne next in line.
Row three starters will be Greg Biffle and NASCAR’s bad boy Denny Hamlin. Rookie Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon will round out the top-10 starters.
Rookie star Danica Patrick will start in the 37th spot.
The owners’ points applies to the first 36 cars with the remainder of the field set either by owners’ points or qualifying attempts this season along with the champion’s provisional.
Forty-four cars were entered for the third race of the season and only Mike Bliss failed to make the starting field.
Saturday’s weather forecast is much improved and the Sprint Cup Series is scheduled for nearly two hours of practice, which will complement the 6 ½ hours of testing that took place on Thursday.
In the first of the two practices, Matt Kenseth led the way at 187.396 miles per hour with Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick nipping at his heels. Greg Biffle led round two with a speed of 189.427 mph, and Johnson and Mark Martin were among the five drivers topping the 189 mark.
FOX will telecast Sunday’s Kobalt Tools 400 starting at 3 p.m. ET.
