HARRISBURG, N.C., (Oct. 6, 1998) - After two frustrating weeks of suffering mechanical failures that resulted in DNFs, a resilient Kenny Wallace drove his Square D Ford to a 16th place finish in last Sunday's UAW-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway. From his 30th starting spot, the St. Louis native dodged spinning race cars and a souring engine before taking the checkered flag in the 334-lap event.
"That's the sign of a good race car driver and the sign of a good crew chief," said Wallace in reference to himself and interim crew chief David Ifft. "We kept diggin' all day long and we were able to stay on the lead lap for most of the race. We missed all those wrecks and then with about 10 laps to go we started to lose the motor. Evidently, we dropped an exhaust valve. We got lucky though, because it must've stuck in the port."
With just five races remaining on the 1998 schedule, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series heads to the ultra-fast Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway for this Sunday's Winston 500. In preparation for the event, Square D Ford driver Kenny Wallace will be bolstered by his strong seventh place run in this spring's DieHard 500 at the 2.66-mile oval. However, he realizes that Talladega is just part one in the two-part superspeedway series, as he will be at the 2.5-mile Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway for the re-scheduled Pepsi 400 next weekend.
"It's going to be a pretty nervy two weeks," said Wallace. "We've got three cars ready to go in case anything happens. Overall, I feel good. At the last Talladega race I ran as high as second when I pushed Dale Jarrett into the lead. I was running with some pretty quick cars, but I got shuffled out of the draft there at the end and wound up seventh."
