Ken Schrader Press Conference Quotes DAYTONA BEACH, FL - February 13, 1998

KEN SCHRADER:

"Morgan Shepard practiced the car this morning, and he's going to run it this afternoon [eventually cancelled due to rain]. I'm going to run it in the last practice tomorrow and go ahead and run it Sunday. I don't foresee it to be any problem. I plan on running the full race."

"It [the wreck] was BIG. We were loose at the start. We came in and pitted and that put us in the back. We went into one, and I guess David Green got into the back of us. It turned down, hooked the left front on the apron, and it was shooting up the track. I said, 'This is going to hurt!' Whenever you go from the bottom up to the top, it usually hits pretty hard. That was it. I guess Benson got us on the way back down. David got into the back end of us and turned us around. Then it went up the bank."

"It ranks right up there [with the hardest hit I've ever had.] They all seem pretty hard at the time. It was hard! I hit one time at Rockingham testing that seemed like a fairly big deal. You can give up speed for a more direct angle. At Rockingham, we obviously weren't going as fast. We were probably running about 150 mph, but hit a little worse angle. You don't try to remember which ones hurt the most. I knew this one was going to leave a mark."

"We've got a jacket that the Copenhagen bull riders wear. We're going to gear up with that. It's just a regular flak jacket, I guess. We're going to wear it, and that's about it. I guess we just got a small crack in the sternum. I don't hurt anyplace, except I'm sore. They don't hurt. The neck is stiff, but it's like it's supposed to be. It's better today than it was yesterday."

"We had a real tough time making up our mind which car we were going to run in the Shootout and which one we were were going to run in the 500. Basically we went with that other car we wrecked yesterday because it was new. This is the car that got us qualified for the No Bull 5 program, and it's a good old race car. I looked at the '98 Media Guide the other day and we were seventh in money won here. It hasn't been real bad to us."

ANDY PETREE:

"Right now, we've got Mike Wallace to run the BUSCH car. He ran it yesterday afternoon. That's what we plan to do. We might have an announcement on the sponsor before the race, but right now, it's just Mike Wallace and no sponsor."

"We're going to use the BUSCH Clash car [Bud Shootout] car on Sunday. It's a good car. We had a hard time choosing which car anyways. I think it's the better of the two cars. That car yesterday didn't handle like we wanted. It was fast in qualifying and did what we wanted there. It looked like it wasn't going to be as good for the 500 as we wanted it to be, especially if the track was hot like it was yesterday. It looks like it's going to be. I think this other car is going to be a better car. The only problem is we've got to start in the back."
