Kansas Magic Fresh in Nemechek's Mind

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Sept. 24, 2008) -- Kansas Speedway, site of Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race, will always carry fond memories for Joe Nemechek, who enjoyed his best weekend of racing at the 1.5-mile track in 2004.

It was hailed as the "Nemechek Triple" as the veteran driver captured the Cup pole on Friday, the Busch Series win on Saturday and the Cup victory on Sunday.

Though many things are now different for Nemechek than they were on that crisp fall weekend in 2004, he still feels something special about the Kansas facility and local area.

"When I enter Kansas Speedway it's hard not to think about the past," said Nemechek, driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet. "As you can imagine I have a comfort zone for the track. I feel this team is ready to have a break out race and Kansas would be an ideal place for that to happen."

The biggest hurdle facing the No. 78 team lately has been a series of accidents and malfunctions. Last week at Dover it was a blown right-front tire early in the race that caused a major setback for Nemechek.

"I keep on saying we need a clean race to get an honest assessment of where we're at," offered Nemechek. "I feel we are improving, but it's hard to gauge your progress when you have accidents and flat tires. We just need some of my old Kansas magic."

Nemechek would love to click his heels and wish for a trip to Kansas' Victory Lane, but the magic he experienced in the past came from plenty of hard work and not from any wizard.

"Nothing comes easy in this sport," said Nemechek. "It's all about a strong work ethic and a never-give-up attitude. When you have those qualities the dividends will eventually pay off. That's why I am excited to be a part of this Furniture Row Racing team."
