New York, N.Y. -- December 2, 1994-- One of NASCAR Winston Cup's most successful drivers, Ernie Irvan, will join TNN Motorsports in 1995 as color commentator for all live Winston Cup telecasts. The announcement was made today by David Hall, Senior Vice President, Cable Networks, Gaylord Entertainment Company.
"We are thrilled to have Ernie Irvan join our announce team," said Mr. Hall. "He is a great competitor and has provided many exciting racing moments for TNN viewers. We know he will bring that same determination to our live telecasts as TNN's color commentator." Mr. Hall added that Irvan will work from TNN's booth until doctors and NASCAR give him the green flag to continue his racing career. Irvan suffered head injuries during practice this year at Michigan International Speedway.
Irvan will be joined in the booth by play-by-play announcer Mike Joy, color commentator Buddy Baker, and pit reporters Glen Jarrett and Randy Pemberton.
"I am really looking forward to this," said Irvan. "If I can't be on the track racing, what better view than from the announcer's booth to see the action on the track. I think TNN viewers will be interested in what I'll have to say because I know what it takes to compete and win in this sport." In the seven years since Irvan joined the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit, he has won 12 races and captured 43 poles for a total purse of over five million dollars. The Salinas, Calif., native won the prestigious Daytona 500 in 1991.
