STEVE PARK (No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"We knew we had a good race car. We didn't get a good qualifying lap, and we've just been a little bit too loose. The Pennzoil Chevrolet was turning good all day long. We just couldn't get that bite we needed up off the corner. We made a change right there at the end. It's another Cinderella Story. Paul Andrews (crew chief) and Dave Charpentier and the guys made one small change to try to help the car. The weather helped us out a little bit. I told Paul when I got in the gas coming off turn two and the car stuck I knew we had a good lap. It's awesome. We've had an awesome season. Pennzoil sponsors the race down here and we came and tested and had a great test. This is just to reward all the guys for all the hard work they've put in.
"We were going for it, and we got that Chevrolet on the pole. That's the second one this year. I wasn't surprised really. I knew the Pennzoil Chevrolet had the lap in it, but we never got in a clean lap in practice. We made a last-minute change to help it up off the corner. I'm just excited. I don't even know what to say. These guys deserve it. It's not just me. It's this whole Pennzoil team. We've struggled in the past and these guys are getting their just rewards for what we've been through.
"It's very important to start up front. This track is hard to pass on and we knew how important it was going to be to qualify. We're excited to be able to start up front. I'm very fortunate to be a part of this team. It's really turned the corner since we won at Watkins Glen (Aug. 13).
"The engine shop changed this motor right before we left. They found a motor with a little more horsepower, and they all put an effort into us coming down here and sitting on the pole. This isn't about me. It's about the whole team. Ricky Rudd really laid down a lap and gave us something to shoot for. We shot for it today, and it worked out. It's great to have that Chevrolet on the front row."
DALE EARNHARDT Jr. (No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"We were real loose in practice and fixed that a little bit. We could have used some cloud cover to speed the track up a little bit, but that'll do."
STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"That's as fast as we'd run all day in practice. We were real loose in practice and tightened the car up a little bit. It got a little bit too tight, but the guys did a good job and we'll be here to race hard Sunday."
JOE NEMECHEK (No. 33 Oakwood Homes Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"That's better than we ran in practice this morning. We thought we could go a little faster, but we were pretty close. We've been running good since we unloaded. We came down and tested a couple of weeks ago and were really fast. It's no big surprise for us. I just had a good, smooth lap. I didn't make any mistakes. We probably left a little time out there, but that was as good a lap as I could have at the time. I think we're going to run well in the race. We still have a little bit of work to do. If I said who was going to win this race besides me, I'd say that 18 and 20 are going to pretty much dominate the show."
MIKE SKINNER (No. 31 Lowe's Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"We went back to what we felt like would work for us, but practice was about half over. The car drove good and it really was a pretty good lap for us. It's probably not going to fare as well as we'd like it to, but that's as quick as we've been so far. We'll start from wherever that ends up."
JEFF GORDON (No. 24 DuPont Automotive Finishes Monte Carlo)
"We've been struggling. I picked up almost three tenths right there. We tried some things early in practice that didn't work, and that got us behind. We've been playing catchup, but we keep getting better each time out. We haven't found the right combination yet, but we'll get it."
TED MUSGRAVE (No. 01 BellSouth Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"It got a little tight in three and four. We don't know why. We thought we had it fixed one time for qualifying, but it came back again. It wouldn't turn down there."
DALE EARNHARDT (No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Monte Carlo)
"We've been off the whole time in practice. I'm really disappointed. I thought we could run faster than that. We were off everywhere."
BOBBY HAMILTON Jr. (No. 57 Bobby Hamilton Racing Monte Carlo)
"I got a little bit loose over in one and two, but I think we'll be OK. I was hoping we could stay in the top 25, but maybe we'll stay in the 30s and be all right."
JERRY NADEAU (No. 25 Michael Holigan.com Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"If you don't unload good, it's hard to get good. The guys in front of us were good all morning in practice. We weren't very fast. I think we were 42nd. The guys did a good job. We needed to work more on the car. We came here with a totally different setup than we ever had. It might work if you spent a whole day here and worked on it, but in an hour and a half we just couldn't make it work, so we just went and totally redid the whole car. Tony (crew chief Furr) put a setup in there he had last year. We ran a fairly decent lap, but I think we could have been a whole lot better. I think we'll be OK for the race."
MICHAEL WALTRIP (No. 7 NationsRent Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"We gained on it, but we got sideways and when that happens you just lose all your momentum down the back straightaway. Bobby Kennedy and the boys gave me a fast car. We struggled a little in practice and finally got it pretty close, but we just got sideways coming off turn two. We ain't giving up. There's a lot of incentive for this team to finish on a good note, and my heart and soul is in to it."
RICKY CRAVEN (No. 50 Midwest Transit Chevrolet Monte Carlo)
"It could have been a good lap, but we knew we had to pick up a couple of tenths. We got real aggressive with the shocks and it put us the wrong way. We were second-round fastest here last year, so maybe we can do it again."
