Homestead: Newman post-qualifying interview

RYAN NEWMAN (No. 12 Alltel Dodge) -- Qualified second "It wasn't a perfect lap, but it was good. I'm real excited about both cars this weekend. Carl had a good lap. I don't know if the track got any faster or slower. That's beside the point.

"It wasn't a perfect lap, but it was good. I'm real excited about both cars this weekend. Carl had a good lap. I don't know if the track got any faster or slower. That's beside the point. We're just excited about seeing how we can race.

"We haven't really had much traffic. The most I've had is two cars in front of me in practice yesterday. So far, so good. It's hard to say. We've felt pretty confident as you've probably seen at times this year going into the race after practice and raced horribly, so we'll see how it is in the race. It drives different, and there's nothing that really stands out except it's got a little better balance.

"Roger Penske and Don Miller and everybody and as I've said in a couple of my pre-qualifying interviews, we needed to try something. We've struggled this year at the mile and a half tracks in dirty air in race conditions. We won't know the answer until the checkered flag falls tomorrow, but it was an executive decision.

"It's not over until tomorrow's over, so no, he (Tony Stewart) doesn't deserve to be champion until the last checkered flag falls and according to the points. There's still a mathematical chance for him not to win, so as soon as it's over it'll be right for him to be the champion if the points fall that way. It's a 10-race Chase for the Championship.

"It's no different in this race than it was in Daytona when we started for the championship. I still have a lot to gain myself from a points standpoint, so I don't feel like I have anything I should give up or could give up. You respect them just as you respect them otherwise, but there's no difference.

"We wish we could have won the pole. We know our lap wasn't perfect, but to be two thousandths off from a guy who won the pole recently at California, so he's capable of qualifying well. We got beat by a guy who's been qualifying well, so that's my point. It's a good effort on his part, and we feel like we could have been a little bit better, so we're happy with second and know we've got a shot to lead the race early and get five bonus points, but we're disappointed, yes, that we didn't win the pole. I think the highlight of our season was Darlington. We didn't win, but that's a special track for me and we had a real good run there.

"We can't do anything about the weather, so if it rains the next two days I'm going fishing. I'll probably go to Lake Okeechobee and try to catch a Big Bertha bass."
