RAMBLINGS -- RICHMOND

Just what we needed....another Busch Pole Winner. Why don't we just let everybody into the Bud Shootout (except the 43 car (G)). We're now guaranteed at least a 16 car field next February. You know, in the past, at the drawing for starting spots for the Clash, the drivers have been presented with a gift from Busch....they may have to take up a collection next year if they plan to continue that gratuity (G).

Bill Elliott's pole today was this first once since he nabbed the top spot at Phoenix in October of 1995. This is also a Mac Tonight race, so don't be looking for that red car.

Darrell Waltrip's color-du-jour is Tide orange....wonder how long it'll take the announcers to mistake that one for the #10 Rudd machine?

Kenny Irwin, Jr. made quite a splash in his debut. He only had the pole for about 45 seconds, but the outside front-row starting spot has gotta make Robert Yates feel a little more confortable with his decision.

Dale Jarrett doesn't get a Top-10 starting spot...and that's news. This will be only the 3rd time in 24 starts that he'll begin from outside the first 10.

Robbie Gordon's 4th place run is his best since he had the pole for the Primestar 500 at Atlanta in March.

STREAKIN...Dick Trickle has 4 Top-10 starts in a row. Ken Schrader has 4 Top-10 starts in a row, and 7 in the last 8 races.

As Ned Jarrett stated on the Q-show on the Deuce, you gotta figure everybody in the Top-38 will SOT. With 2nd round runs in the heat of the day, it doesn't look promising for those guys who were 39+ today. We're looking at a field of 42, so there will be 5 guys on this weeks' trouble train out of town early. Mike Bliss, Ron Hornaday (new driver, new engines, same results), and Gary Bradberry have no provisionals available. 3 of the 4 provisionals will go to Brett Bodine, Mike Skinner, & Chad Little, with NASCAR having to use a special provisional (based on last years Owner Points) for that 4th one.

Richard Petty is the all-time leader in wins at Richmond with 13, with Darrell Waltrip & Rusty Wallace the leaders among active drivers with 6. It should be noted that Rusty's 6 wins have all come after this track was re-configured to 3/4 mile in 1988....that 6 of the 18....as in 33%.

It's a Saturday Night at the Sawyer Showplace, there'll be an intimate gathering of 100K or so, and the points battle is nip & tuck. It don't get much better than this.
