RAMBLINGS -- NEW HAMPSHIRE
This may be the weekend for firsts (first time for 2 races at the Magic Mile), but the same old song was played in qualifying....Ken Schrader. He copped the pole here again, the 20th for his career, and his second this season. I'm sure he's hoping for a better finish than 2 months ago tho....he finished 11th in the July event.
Brett Bodine was 3rd quickest today. This will be his best starting spot in over 2 years....since he started outside the front row at North Wilkesboro in April of 1995.
Rick Mast (7th) has his best starting spot in almost a year....since he started 2nd at Dover last September.
Lake Speed (9th) has his best starting spot since Atlanta in March.
Looks like Dave Marcis (26th) might make the field this weekend. It's been a long time between starts for the wing-tipped veteran. He's missed the last 6 races (DNQ's), and used provisional entries for the 2 races before those. This will be his first start since Pocono in July...in other words, he's raced only once since the tour was last in the Granite State.
Super-Sub Todd Bodine is in his 5th different car of the season this weekend, tho whether he races in it Sunday remains to be seen. Looks like the #99 may use a provisional this week. Todd's been in the 25, 7, 34, 96, & now the 99. That's a Chevy, Ford, Chevy, Chevy, & Ford....and of course, next year he'll be in a Pontiac. Hope he's got velcro patches for his drivers suit (G).
STREAKIN...Ken Schrader has 5 Top-10 starts in a row, and 8 Top-10 starts in the last 9 races.
What's experience worth? 1/100th of a second....thats how much quicker Dale Earnhardt was than his driver, Steve Park. Course, Park does have a few laps in at this place. Park is hoping to make his second WC start.
Robert Pressley's got the mount in the #77 this weekend, and was 31st quickest....could be kinda iffy for tomorrow, but with their not being eligible for a provisional, I would suspect they'd SOT and let the other guys shoot at 'em.
Kevin Lepage is the driver du jour this race in the #91....tho it's starting to look like it really doesn't matter who's behind the wheel.
With the 2nd round scheduled for tomorrow morning, it could make it rather interesting. Usually the second round is in the heat of the day, but with a 10 AM go, it's a pretty good possibility that times could be quicker tomorrow than they were today. With 46 cars here and the prospects of a 43 car field likely, the teams in trouble look like Gary Bradberry, Kevin Lepage, and Lance Hooper (the 1 team is out of provisionals). Chad Little or Jeff Green could be on the bubble tho....they're real low in owner points (40th and 37th respectively).
Best move of the weekend....the naming of Mike Staley as Grand Marshal of this event. His family owned North Wilkesboro Speedway, and it was the sale of that track that brought a second race to NHIS. Not necessarily a balm for short-track fans, but at least a nice gesture by a class family, the Bahre's.
