Kevin Harvick earned the Budweiser pole at Richmond International Raceway with a lap of 128.425 mph. It is Harvick's second pole this season and sixth of his career.

"We didn't know if it was going to be good enough until right there at the end with Ryan (Newman) going last," said Harvick.

Harvick sits 15th in points and has little hopes of making the 'chase' field this year; bar a win in this event.

"Everybody from 8th to 13th is going to do everything they can to get every spot," Harvick said of the last 'chase' race. "We all go out every week and race as hard as we can.I don't think you are going to see anything out of the ordinary on a short track."

Greg Biffle was second with a lap of 128.309 mph. It is Biffle's 10th top- five start of the year.

"We want to be courteous to those guys who are trying to get into the 'chase'," said Biffle. "We don't want to be the guys that make it or break it for anyone.I can't complain we have a great car, one of the best cars we have ever had here."

There was a surprise for third, with Travis Kvapil grabbing his best start of the year. Kvapil nailed down a lap of 128.163 mph in his Dodge to earn just his second career top-five.

"Feels good, we have struggled a lot this year," said Kvapil. "We took the lessons we learned in the spring race here.the car felt really good.I felt pretty good about it."

Teammates Mark Martin and Kurt Busch complete the top five. Point leader Tony Stewart rolls off 25th.
