Green in second Hedrick car at Indy
LOUDON, N.H. (july 10, 1998) Larry Hedrick Motorsports announced that a second NASCAR Winston Cup Series entry is set for the Brickyard 400 and will be driven by David Green.
The one-race deal is to help the Conwood Company, LP, of Memphis, Tenn. to introduce its now "Kodiak Ice" brand of smokeless tobacco.
Green, formerly a NASCAR Busch Series champion and the driver of the No. 96 Chevrolet on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series, currently drives the No. 36 Stanley Pontiac on the NASCAR Busch Series. He will test a blue and white Hedrick-owned Chevrolet Monte Carlo on July 19-21 in anticipation of the Aug. 1 race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Last year, Green qualified the No. 96 Chevrolet ninth for the Brickyard 400, eventually finishing 35th following an accident.
"The Kodiak people asked us to explore the possibility of allowing them to get added publicity for their new "Kodiak Ice" product during the Brickyard 400 activities," Hedrick said. "After studying the situation, the availability of race cars and equipment, and how we could best accomplish this request, we were able to oblige them. The availability of driver David Green helped in the decision process, too.
"Green is a proven and talented Winston Cup driver who has shown his capabilities and potential, and we were happy to work out an arrangement with him for this special one-time deal. With his skills and personality, he will be a good representative for 'Kodiak Ice' and Larry Hedrick Motorsports."
Green will be joined by the team's full-time driver Steve Grissom, who pilots the No. 41 Kodiak Chevrolet. His status will remain unchanged by the part-time addition of a second car to the Hedrick stables.
"In no way will this special arrangement affect our regular No. 41 Kodiak Team or driver Steve Grissom," Hedrick said. "They will also be testing and preparing to make their best effort for the Brickyard race. It should be clearly understood, we are committed to Steve Grissom and to Kodiak. Steve is our full-time driver, and he and the team are going all-out in their efforts to improve each race and have a great second half this season."
"With the tremendous exposure opportunities in the East Central part of the country that surrounds the Brickyard race, we felt this would be the perfect time to promote our exciting new "Kodiak Ice" product," said Woody Cothren, Conwood Company vice president for marketing.
