Rick Hendrick, accused of bribery in building his car dealership empire, pleaded guilty yesterday in an Asheville courtroom. Hendrick apparently has struck a deal with prosecutors and formally changed his plea in federal court in Asheville. He previously pleaded not guilty. It wasn't clear what charge or charges are included in the plea bargain. Details of the plea agreement were not available Wednesday, though Hendrick is not expected to spend time in prison. Lovable Fashions (the Dalton GA based bra company) has filed for bankruptcy and will be unable to continue its sponsorship of Tammy Jo Kirk's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team. Kirk and team owner Geoff Bodine should have something worked out with some part of the country music industry for Saturday's Federated Auto Parts 250 at Nashville, but beyond that the future of the team is unknown. Kenny Irwin, the Cintas Rookie of the Year point leader in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series who will make a run for NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year in 1998 in Robert Yates' No. 28 Texaco/Havoline Ford, got his first taste of a NASCAR Winston Cup Series car at Richmond International Raceway and logged a competent effort, according to several veteran observers. Irwin, who plans to run as many as five NASCAR Winston Cup Series races this season in cars prepared by David Blair Motorsports, using engines from Yates Racing, hopes to make his debut in the Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 on Sept. 6 at Richmond. "He ran fairly decent," said Blair Motorsports' spokesman Shorty Edwards, who said that the team ran "a couple 50-lap runs and a 70-lap run. We started off at about a 23-flat, got up to a 22.80 or .90 and finally ended up running consistent 23.60s to .90s ... about what the race pace ended up at last year. "He's still got a lot of riding to do (testing), but he's a smooth kid and I think he'll do fine." (NASCAR Online)

Hermie Sadler picked up his second Busch Pole of the season, and the third of his career at Michigan yesterday. Sadler will start first for the Detroit Gasket 200 at Michigan Speedway. Sadler bested a slew of NASCAR Winston Cup Series regulars atop the field. Dick Trickle will join Sadler on the front row, and Bobby Labonte and Terry Labonte will start third and fifth, respectively. NASCAR Busch Series rookie Steve Park in fourth rounds out the top-5. There was, however, some disappointing news for the Sadler family. Elliott Sadler, consistently one of the series' top qualifiers, wrecked on his lap. He was uninjured, but unable to complete his lap. (NASCAR Online)
