Ford teams completed their second day of testing at Talladega Superspeedway in preparation for the 2000 NASCAR Winston Cup season. The man who turned the fastest lap of the day was none other than Buddy Baker, who was substituting for Rusty Wallace in the No. 2 Miller Lite Taurus. Wallace is completing a jet flight training program in Tucson and couldn't attend the two-day test.

BUDDY BAKER --2-- Miller Lite Taurus -- HAVE YOU HAD THE MOST FUN OF ANYONE THESE PAST TWO DAYS? "No question about it. This is one of my favorite race tracks, here and Daytona, and for a team like Penske and Rusty Wallace to give you a call to come down and test their car, it helps me in the television end of what I do and it also makes you feel a lot younger to get out there and run and know that you can still be competitive. These are great race cars. I tell you what, I think the three models this year are gonna be pretty evenly matched from what I here about tests and all. These cars are extremely stable and that's the one thing I like about the Ford this year."

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU TO GET THAT CALL? "Yeah, it does. When I did my first day of testing I felt kind of ragged when I got here and last night I was taking a shower and I started jumping around in the shower. It's the fountain of youth for a guy that really enjoys driving quality race cars. I've gotta tell you, there's only a few of 'em out there that I would sit down in and run a test program and Rusty's is one of 'em."

YOU'VE GOT THE FASTEST LAP OF THE DAY. THAT MUST MEAN SOMETHING DOESN'T IT? "It really and truly, I mean, I'm sure if Rusty was here and with his input to the car...Robin Pemberton and all the boys that work on Penske's outfit and the input Jeremy and his team has on the test, it's just a very pleasant thing. If I was last I'd be having just as much fun as I am running quick."

DOES THIS MAKE YOU GET THE BUG AND AT LEAST THINK THAT MAYBE YOU'D WANT TO RACE ONE MORE TIME? "The good part is I can tell myself if I really had to I could, but in reality there was a reason I retired. It's for the younger competitors, but, still it's quite a kick in the pants for me to get out there and run good."
