HUT STRICKLIN --90-- Hills Brothers Taurus -- "We've had an awful time here today with this Hills Brothers Coffee Ford. We just can't seem to get a good balance. We've either been tight or too loose. I don't know, we made a lot of changes before qualifying and still haven't hit on it so we're gonna keep working."
MIKE WALLACE --7-- NationsRent Taurus -- "It's not very good. It pushed pretty bad getting down in the middle of the corner, but I've come to realize over the last week or two that this poor qualifying effort isn't all that big a deal. We'll just make the best of it and hope it makes the race. If it does, we'll race hard on Sunday. If it doesn't, hey, we're still luckier than a lot of people."
DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus -- "That was a good lap for us. We picked up a little bit from practice and that's always a good thing."
IS IT EASY TO GET BACK IN A RACING MODE AFTER THE LAST WEEK? "When you get back in the car you have to forget everything else that's going on around us. Today, we're only in the car for a short time so you have a lot of time to think about other things and to see everything going on here is unbelievable. The race cars are painted differently and everybody has something going on. It's just great to see. I got so fired up after watching President Bush that I was ready to do anything that he wanted to do. It's just good to see that these fans come out here and support this and the teams are behind what we're doing and we're a united nation."
WILL THE CAR RACE AS WELL AS IT QUALIFIED? "Yeah, I think so. It's a good race car. We had a good test this week at Charlotte. There were some things that we went there and tried and I think they're gonna benefit us here and some other places that we go. I'm pretty excited. We know Gordon whipped us pretty bad here the first time, so Ricky (Rudd) and I need to be up front."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus -- "We've been trying to find it all day long. We just haven't had the speed like we thought we would have. Everytime we come here we always qualify really good and this time we were two-tenths off the whole day. Right now we're still two-tenths off, but I believe we'll race good. We learned a lot about what not to do from the last time and I feel good about Sunday's race. At least the weather is gonna be consistent. The temperatures should be the same so we should get no surprises on Sunday like we did last time here when we had all the rain in practice and then sunny skies on race day."
RICKY RUDD --28-- Texaco Havoline Taurus -- "I'm not really sure what happened. We debated about whether we should go on scuffed tires or sticker tires and we elected to go on pretty hard scuffed tires. I don't know if that was the difference or not, but that was pretty much the slowest we ran all day. I knew it was gonna get a little bit slower as the day wore on, but I'm not sure. We just didn't get a hold of the race track. We were sort of sliding and I guess in hindsight we probably shouldn't have scuffed tires."
JEFF BURTON --99-- Citgo SUPERGARD Taurus -- "That's what I thought we would get. That's what we ran in practice and normally here people don't pick up. Generally, if anything, most people kind of slow down. We ran the same speed we had run in practice, so that's gonna be okay. I have always struggled here qualifying. It's a problem with me. We've worked really hard on trying to fix it, we just haven't fixed it yet. That's not gonna be terrible. It's certainly not great, but it's not terrible and we're gonna have to take it whether we like it or not anyway."
JEREMY MAYFIELD --12-- Mobil 1 Taurus -- "I'm real satisfied. I think we were right around there in practice. We ran a .30, but anytime you can come back in qualifying and run close to what you did in practice we're happy with it. I feel like we got everything we could out of it. The car handled good and the motor ran good, so it's been a good day for us so far."
WHAT'S IT LIKE TO GET BACK ON THE TRACK? "It feels good. I've been watching a lot of interviews with drivers and it just feels good to be here. You still feel kind of bad in one sense for the rescue workers still working in New York and trying to get it cleaned up over there, but this is our job. Our job is entertainment and we've got to do it. There are still mixed emotions, but it does feel good to get back out here to the race track."
WHAT ABOUT THE CARS AND HOW THEY LOOK? "I think it's pretty awesome. That's the really good thing is that everyone is really supporting each other throughout the United States. It's not only us in racing, but everybody in the United States and worldwide are supporting each other. I think it's pretty cool to come out and see this much support and patriotism."
TODD BODINE --66-- Route 66/Kmart Taurus -- "I'm pretty happy with it. We've had a problem getting off of four all day and we had a problem right there on both laps. The car was pretty decent though one and two. Getting off of four the first lap it pushed. I drove it a little different the second lap and it got loose. I didn't get either lap right off of four, I had to lift both times. If we didn't have to lift, we would have been up even further, but that was definitely the best lap we had all day and the best the car was. We've just got to go to work for the race."
ROBERT PRESSLEY --77-- Jasper Engines Taurus -- "That wasn't what we wanted. We thought we'd be in the top 15 or top 18, but qualifying and racing are two different things here. We've just got to keep this car right and get ready to race. We were a little bit too tight. We were pretty decent in practice and put a set of tires on that got us a little loose. We tightened it up after that and I think it was just a case that the tires got us."
RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus -- "That was a great effort by the team. The second half of the season has been a lot of fun for the Tide team. We've made a lot of progress and I'd sure love to win here at Dover. It's one of my favorites because it's a little closer to home. We're looking forward to a great week."
WHAT ABOUT BEING BACK AT THE TRACK. DOES IT FEEL GOOD? "It really does. Last week was the complete opposite. We got exactly what we needed -- a day to be with the family and give a lot of consideration to how fortunate we are and the people that were less fortunate and lost family members. It felt good to get back here and it felt that way yesterday coming up. I commend NASCAR and everyone for making the decisions they made. It's always nice to get back to work."
WHAT ABOUT THE RACE? "We were top-five last time and I feel like we've got a better car. Talk is cheap. I could sit here and talk about winning forever, but we've got to back it up. So far, the second half of the year this team has backed it up. Every week we've raised the bar and we've got the potential. That's all you can ask for."
ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus -- "Every week it seems like we have some sort of problems with the tires. I don't know if I'm just not judging things right off of them, but I can't get them to work to our advantage. I tell you, it's a great race car. We have not touched one single bolt on this thing all day long and, man, I've never been that loose since I've been here. There isn't any way the track changed that much, not a cement track, so it's very, very disappointing. To feel like we had a shot at the pole and ended up qualifying 21st is very disappointing."
BUT HERMIE GOT IN THE RACE. "That's great. That's gonna override our effort. As much as he's tried, he's got a new crew chief this week in Jim Long and it looks like he made a difference. I'm glad to see Hermie in."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Pfizer Taurus -- "The car was too loose for me to drive. There wasn't much grip out there, but I was surprised because I thought I could at least run a 23.50. Most everybody slowed up, so I thought a 23.50 would have been a reasonable expectation."
