Starting in his 69th Winston Cup event, Steve Park in the Dale Earnhardt, Inc.-owned #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet Monte Carlo heads west to California for the NAPA Auto Parts 500 this weekend at California (Fontana) Speedway; shown live on ABC beginning at 2 p.m. EDT.
During his highly successful Busch campaign in 1997, Park finished an impressive second after starting on the pole during at California Speedway. With limited seat time on the 2-mile track, Park looks to the strength of crew chief Paul Andrews who took Jeremy Mayfield to a seventh-place finish at California Speedway early last season.
Park's only qualifying effort at California produced him the pole while running in the Busch series in 1997. He missed the race in 1998 while recuperating from injuries sustained in Atlanta and, last year, inclement weather forced NASCAR to determine the starting grid by owner points, putting the #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet in the 30th spot.
For the second consecutive year, Park will join Kyle Petty in the Ride Across America for Charity. The NASCAR motorcycle gang will make seven stops (Prescott, Ariz., Durango, Col., Amarillo, Texas, Tulsa, Memphis, Charleston, W.Va., and Richmond) while visiting children's hospital wards along the way.
"Paul (Andrews) puts together a good race car for these 2-mile tracks and I' m looking forward to getting into the Pennzoil car at California," said Park. "We ran really well together as a team at both Michigan races last year and that track is very similar to the one in Fontana. It definitely gives us something to look forward to."
