JEREMY MAYFIELD QUOTES
"We didn't have the kind of finish we wanted at Daytona, but something good came out of the misfortune. We learned a lot about the No. 19 Dodge Dealers/UAW Dodge Charger team. This group won't quit. After we were caught up in the mishap early in the race and lost several laps making the repairs, it would have been easy to sit back and just make laps. The No. 19 crew didn't do that. They kept working on the car every stop, trying to make it better. By the end of the race, they had the car balanced and competitive. Being several laps down, I elected to stay at the back of the draft and let the leaders race for the win."
"We had a good test at Las Vegas, so we expect the things we learned there and during other tests to translate into a good setup for California. Combine that with the attitude of this team and it's easy to see why we're eager to get to California. This race will provide a real picture of the season ahead. Teams will leave California knowing they can be competitive or there's a lot of work to be done."
JEREMY MAYFIELD AT CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY
Saturday's race will mark Jeremy Mayfield's 12th start at California Speedway. He has one win, three top-fives, four top-10s and has led 60 laps at the track. Mayfield earned his best start of second in his second career start at the track in 1998.
Mayfield has an 11.545 average starting position at California Speedway, the best among all drivers who have competed in all 11 races there.
Mayfield is one of only 13 drivers who have competed in all 11 NASCAR Nextel Cup Series events at California Speedway.
Mayfield earned his second career NASCAR Cup Series victory in the 2000 event at California Speedway by beating Bobby Labonte by one-third of a second. Mayfield started 24th after qualifying was rained out, and passed Mark Martin for the lead with 25 laps to go.
MAYFIELD IN A HOT SEAT DURING 2000 VICTORY
Mayfield's 2000 win at California Speedway came in a race that he didn't even expect to finish. He battled a car that overheated so much that his team was forced to throw ice water over him every time he pitted. A late-race caution forced Mayfield to lead a restart with three laps to go, and his engine stopped as he accelerated through the second turn when his ignition failed. However, Mayfield was able to restart the car through a backup system and maintain his lead to a heart-pounding checkered flag finish.
