Marlin Finishes 29th at California Speedway

FONTANA, Calif. (Sept. 3, 2006)-- It wasn't the finish Sterling Marlin was looking for in his 700th career NASCAR Cup start. But an unruly racecar forced the veteran driver to a 29th place finish in Sunday's Sony HD 500 here at California Speedway.

"We didn't have the car we needed today," offered Marlin, who started the 500-mile, 250-lap event 27th. "The Ginn Clubs & Resorts Chevrolet wasn't working all night-- mostly tight and bouncing all over the racetrack. We just couldn't find the right combination."

With his 700th start, Marlin became the 11th driver in NASCAR Cup history to reach that milestone. Other drivers include: Richard Petty (1,185), Dave Marcis (883), Ricky Rudd (875), Terry Labonte (844), Darrell Waltrip (809), Kyle Petty (773), Bill Elliott (751), Bobby Allison (719), Rusty Wallace (706) and Buddy Baker (701).

"It was a frustrating evening all around and we're extremely disappointed with the result," said Marlin. "But what a neat thing to accomplish as a driver. I've been around race cars for as long as I can remember and I've loved every minute of it."

Marlin continued, "We head to Richmond next week-- I'm confident we can secure a solid finish in my 701st start."

In the May race at Richmond, Marlin claimed a ninth-place finish.

Saturday night's race at Richmond International Raceway will be televised on TNT at 7 p.m. ET.
