UPS Team Looks for Consistency at California

MOORESVILLE, N.C., (August 30, 2005) ----- California Speedway is one of the tracks at which Dale Jarrett and the #88 UPS Racing Team have yet to post a win in NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series competition. The California Speedway has been an up and down kind of track for Jarrett and Team UPS. The team finished 11th in their most recent visit to California which was the spring race in February.

The #88 UPS/Robert Yates Racing Team has been running at the conclusion of eight of the 10 races to have taken place at California since 1997. The two races the team failed to finish were the result of an engine failure in the spring of 1999 and an accident during the spring of 2003. Jarrett's worst finishes aside from the two DNF's are a pair of 24th-place finishes. The UPS Team has six top-11 finishes including a fifth-place finish at California in the spring of 2002. The team finished eighth in this event one year ago, during which their teammates, Elliott Sadler and the #38 Robert Yates Racing team won.

"California Speedway has been a pretty good track for this team and for Robert Yates Racing," Jarrett said. "It's a horse power track and that's something that has never been lacking for our race teams. California is one of the tracks where we ran decent this year. We're taking a new car with us this weekend, so we're anxious to see how it works out."

Jarrett Discusses Racing at California Speedway

How different is California from Michigan?

"The two tracks are similar in that they are down force tracks that are two miles in length. Obviously Michigan's surface has a lot more age to it so it's a place where we have multiple racing grooves. It seems that each time we go to California it just gets better and better, and we expect to see even more of that this time around. It certainly is a wide enough track to accommodate two and three-wide racing, but it's just a matter of letting the track age some more so that there is enough grip to allow those multiple grooves to develop."

Is it still strange to be anywhere other than Darlington on Labor Day weekend?

"It is to me just because for as long as I can remember we spent the Labor Day weekend at Darlington. We started going there that weekend when my dad raced and I certainly have some fond memories at Darlington. But we know that in order for the sport to continue growing we have to make changes whether we like them or not. Certainly it would be great to be able to leave the track and be at home in your own bed on Sunday night, but that's the way things are now and we just have to adapt. The California track is more appealing from a television standpoint as well as a corporate standpoint. It takes us to a market where the fans are still learning about our sport and it's important for us to be there to continue the growth of the sport."
