Lack of Grip Thwarts Almirola's Performance in California

FONTANA, Calif. (Aug. 31, 2008) -- Aric Almirola could never get into a rhythm in Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Auto Club Speedway and the end result was a 30th -place finish.

The culprit for Almirola and the No. 8 U.S. Army team was a lack of grip during the 250-lap, 500-mile race.

"We could never get the Army Chevy Impala to stick," said Almirola. "The car was slipping and sliding for almost the entire race."

Almirola, who came into the race on the heels of a solid 13th-place result last week in Bristol, Tenn., was looking for another strong performance.

"What happened tonight wasn't what we were expecting after two good practice sessions yesterday," explained the 24-year-old Almirola. "We had some momentum after Bristol, but didn't capitalize on it."

"We're a good race team and the results will get better," added Almirola. "We're not going to hang our heads. We'll do exactly what our soldiers would do -- fight harder and never say quit. They (soldiers) are our inspiration."

Crew chief Tony Gibson was equally disappointed with the team performance.

"We swung everything at the car, but nothing connected. Not much else to say," said Gibson.

The No. 8 Dale Earnhardt Inc. team dropped from 15th to 17th in the owner point standings. There are 11 races remaining in the 2008 season.
