Good Day Ends Abruptly -- #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota Places 33rd at California
David Reutimann, driver of the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, started 33rd in the Auto Club 500 today from California Speedway.
As soon as the green flag waived, David Reutimann started moving the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota to the front. David quickly drove the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota from a starting position of 33rd all the way to 14th in just 28 laps.
"When the race started I was happy with the handling of the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota, and my main objective was to run a steady first half of the race; knowing that a lot can happen in 500 miles," said David.
After three cautions in the first 20 laps, the race would go caution free leading most teams to pit under green for new tires and fuel. Unfortunately, right after the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota made a mid-race green flag pit stop, a caution flag fell which trapped David and many others a lap down.
The second half of the Auto Club 500 for the #00 Domino's team consisted of trying to get the free pass and get back on the lead lap. Every time David would get close to putting the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota in the right position, caution flags seemed to fly preventing the team from getting back on the lead lap and back into contention.
"The #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota was loose all night which made it tough to handle in the corners, but the Domino's Pizza team kept making gains -- getting the car better. It seemed as if the circumstances would just not go our way," David said.
Those circumstances did not improve for the #00 Domino's team, as on lap 239 Greg Biffle accidentally bumped the #00 Domino's Pizza Toyota in the corner sending David hard into the wall and out of the race.
"I'm disappointed in how things finished. The #00 Domino's Pizza team was working so hard and we deserved to finish this race, but I know this team will continue to give 100%," said Reutimann.
