MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 6, 2001) - When Devin Birmingham, Vice President of Eel River Racing, opened the mail last week he got a little surprise from one of Kenny Wallace's fans - a note with a check for $15.

With the No. 27 team still searching for a primary sponsor, US Navy Chief Petty Officer William Downs wanted to do his part to see his favorite driver race in the Daytona 500.

"Kenny Wallace is a very nice person," said Downs. "My wife and I met him back when he drove for Filmar Racing. He and his family truly represent what NASCAR is all about - family.

"I know what I sent won't make a dent in what is needed for the car," Downs continued, "but I want those hard-working guys to have something good to eat at the track."

When Wallace heard the news about Downs' generosity, he was elated at the support coming from his fans.

"I think what Mr. Downs did is a beautiful gesture," said Wallace. "He wrote in his letter that in the military they learn to take care of their own no matter what the situation and that our team was like his sailors and needed to be taken care of.

"It's great to have the support of my fans right now," Wallace continued. "We had some great testing sessions in January to where we are sure to be a competitive team right out of the box with or without a sponsor.

With the Daytona 500 a little over a week away, Eel River Racing's sponsor search continues. But, with fan support like this, sponsors are sure to see the value in Kenny Wallace and Eel River Racing.
