DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Aug. 19, 2002) - It would be difficult to have the Budweiser Shootout At Daytona without Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet.

On Friday during qualifying at Michigan International Speedway, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Bud Pole for the Pepsi 400 Presented By Farmer Jack and earned a starting spot in next year's Budweiser Shootout on Feb. 9 at Daytona International Speedway.

Earnhardt Jr. toured the two-mile oval at Michigan International Speedway in his No. 8 Budweiser Chevrolet in 37.961 seconds, 189.668 mph.

It was Earnhardt Jr.'s fifth career Bud Pole in 98 Winston Cup starts and earned him his third berth in the Budweiser Shootout, a non-points All-Star race featuring the previous year's pole winners and past Budweiser Shootout champions.

In the 2002 Budweiser Shootout, Earnhardt Jr., the 2001 Pepsi 400 champion, finished second behind winner Tony Stewart.

Earnhardt Jr. becomes the 18th driver to date to be eligible for the 2003 Budweiser Shootout. The record for most drivers in the Budweiser Shootout is 22, set in last year's race. With 13 races left in the 2002 Winston Cup season, that record could easily be broken.
