Dale Earnhardt, Jr. didn't get quite what he wanted out of the No. 8 DEI Chevrolet at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

He led at times but the car started handling poorly when the sun began to set. His chances were slim to win the NASCAR Nextel Cup this year in any case, and the tight race car prevented him from grabbing a better result than fifth place.

"We didn't have the best car today," explained Earnhardt. "But we just kept trying to make it better and better. We made the Chase and we fought hard and we are going to try again next year. We have a great team, just a really great team. We had a really good car when the sun was out and we led some laps.

"But as soon as the sun went down, it was like a switch, and we just weren't that good."

Earnhardt finished 19th in the race, and winds up completing his season fifth in points 147 points shy of champion Johnson. Earnhardt has one victory this season.

"I am excited about 2007," Earnhardt said. "My guys are kind of bummed out tonight, we had a great car tonight and they are really bummed out about how we finished but we have had a great team all year long and we have so much to look forward too. We just have to maintain a great positive attitude going into the off season. Just get some work done, get some good cars built and put it to them next year."
