Winston Cup Career starts for Skinner: 180
Morgan-McClure Motorsports backed up the past two qualifying efforts of 13th (Charlotte) and 19th (Richmond) with the third top-20 in a row. Following a 23rd place finish in NASCAR Winston Cup Happy Hour, the crew placed final touches on the NO. 4 Kodak MAX Film Monte Carlo in preparations for the 400-mile event.
Mike Skinner, who had picked off 7 spots by lap 15, produced lap times as fast as and often faster than the leader (No. 48) during the halfway section and end of the race. Progressing as high as ninth and running between 10th and 13th positions for a large portion of the event, the No.4 Kodak MAX Film Chevy had the misfortune of running out of fuel while entering the pits under green flag conditions. Skinner coasted into the pits for a scheduled pit stop on lap 212. The team entered pit road 11th and exited 27th.
More bad luck hit when a caution flag waved two laps after the pit stop. Chris Carrier, in his second week as crew chief for Morgan-McClure Motorsports, made the call to stay out under caution in order to gain a lap back. However, Skinner felt the car had a tire going down and brought the familiar yellow machine back into the pits for service.
Chemistry between Skinner and Carrier seems to be mixing well. A radio conversation during one of the final cautions of the day between the two:
"Does the driver need anything? Water or Gatorade?"
Skinner replies, "The driver doesn't need anything, well except for maybe a Krispy Kreme Donut"
"Your wife didn't bake me any muffins and bring them to the hauler for breakfast, so no donut for you," Carrier quickly answered.
Larry McClure quotes
"It is frustrating to be so close to top-fives and possible wins and have the opportunities jerked out from under you. Whether anyone has taken notice or not, this team has had several strong runs going this season. We are competitive for top-10 and top-15 positions practically each week. Something always seems to stand in the way of it showing up in the results at the end of the race.
"We definitely had a top-10 car in Dover. I'm really proud of our pit crew. They did a great job all day in the pits servicing the Kodak MAX Film Chevy."
