DOVER, Del. (September 20, 2002) - The No. 40 Coors Light and No. 41 Target teams of Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates secured 26th and 31st qualifying positions for the MBNA America 400 at Dover International Speedway on Friday.
Sterling Marlin, driver of the No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T, will start in 26th position for Sunday's event. Marlin ran a 23.285-second lap at a fast speed of 154.606 mph. In 33 starts at Dover International Speedway, Marlin has two top-5s and 10 top-10s. He has no wins and no poles at the track. His best finish is fifth and happened twice (9/20/87 and 6/3/90); his best start is fifth (6/4/95). Marlin finished in the top-10 in both races at Dover in 2001.
"The guys on the Coors Light Dodge team kept working on it and got it better," said Marlin after his lap. "It was terrible when practice started, but we saw in practice that the car never slowed down. We've got a good setup for the race. We ran about the same speed in qualifying, but we adjusted because we knew the track was going to get slicker. We ran 23.40s every time we went out in practice. We put on new tires and picked up about two tenths. A lot of guys picked up half a second, but from what I see now, we're going to race good. The tire feels better. I think it's got a little more grip."
Jimmy Spencer, driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T, will start in 31st position. Spencer's fastest lap was recorded at 154.261 mph (23.337 seconds). Spencer's first NASCAR Winston Cup start was on 6/4/1989 at Dover International Speedway. In 25 starts at Dover International Speedway, Spencer has four top-10 finishes.
"The car just wasn't fast, and we don't know why," said Spencer. "We worked on it all day, and we just never could get it any faster."
The MBNA America 400 from Dover International Speedway will be broadcast on TNT on Sunday, September 22 at 1 p.m., e.d.t.
