FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES MBNA 400 QUALIFYING,
June 4, 1999 Dover Downs International Speedway

RUSTY WALLACE -2- Miller Lite Taurus - "It slowed up a tenth. I don't know if it's the track or what's going on, but the car felt good. It was just a little too tight from the center out. It was really good in practice. We ran a .72 in practice. We were first and second the whole time in practice. But I'm happy with my lap. We'll go to work on the chassis set-up. I just think the track just tightened up with everybody. Really what's happened is it got hotter. And the grip in the front tires have just kind of gone away with the heat."

MARK MARTIN -6- Valvoline Taurus - "I got about everything that was there. Maybe the 18 car will go out and sit on the pole. I wish I could have squeezed just a little more out of it, but I felt like I got everything that was there. It'll be a good starting spot. We haven't sat on the pole yet this year, and this would have been a good place to do that, but Jarrett ran fast. I knew a .70 was going to hard to beat. I went for it, and came up a little short. ARE YOU SURPRISED EVERYBODY THAT MADE THE TOP 25 BROKE THE TRACK RECORD. "No. The first lap I made around the place was 23.10. It was obvious it was going to be fast. I assume it's smoother. They've made significant progress. See all the white spots on the track. Everywhere it's white there are a lot less bumps. Everywhere it's white they've ground bumps off." WHAT WILL THAT MEAN DURING THE RACE? "The lap times will be faster than they were last time we race here." WILL YOU HAVE TO BE MORE CAUTIOUS? "I'm not sure about that. Maybe less cautious. It may be easier to race on. I'm not sure. We'll find a lot more out tomorrow."

BRETT BODINE -11- Paychex Taurus - "The whole characteristic of the car went from one way to the other, and we don't know why. The car had been a little loose in practice, and it went to dead push in qualifying. We'll just have to hope that gets us in the race, and we'll have to see what we can do with race set-up. We're going to be starting way back, so we are going to have our work cut out for us."

JEREMY MAYFIELD -12- Mobil 1 Taurus - "It was weird here this time. We
were fast all through practice. The car was good. The car has been good.
It seemed like everybody in front of us had the same problem. The track
just got a little different and a little tighter. It was the same for
everybody. We changed a little bit for qualifying with air pressure. It
wasn't quite enough. When we get ready to race it will be totally
different. We'll be a lot better."

KEVIN LEPAGE - 16 - TV Guide Taurus - "What a great rejuvenation for the team from last week at Charlotte when we had to take a provisional. To come here and do what we did right now, it's just an amazing feat for these guys. They were down in the dumps after Charlotte. But they all dug in deep, and worked their tails off all week long and prepared a great race car for us. I just can't say enough for this team, the engine department up in Livonia and the chassis department at Liberty. Without the three of them there is no way I could be where I am today." ELLIOTT SADLER -21- Citgo Taurus - "We were just a little loose. I'm disappointed because we ran a whole lot better than that in practice. I woulda had a shot at the pole, but I just probably drove the car in a little too hard and made it loose. But we're in first day, and we can work on it from there and get a better deal for the race.

JOHNNY BENSON - 26 - Cheerios Taurus - "We ran an 80 in practice and that was about 10th quick. I tell you what, we've got a good car. Going early didn't help us at all. I think we've still got a good race car so I'm not too worried about it.

KENNY IRWIN - 28 - Texaco Taurus - "I just thought I could come here and be better, but hopefully that will get us in the top-25 today, and then we'll be happy. It was just not what I was looking for. I can't get just the feel I want. Hopefully it will get us a decent starting spot."

DARRELL WALTRIP - 66 - Big K-Mart Taurus - "I don't know what happened.
Something's wrong with the motor. When I was coming to get the green it
just cut off. I don't know what's wrong with it."

DALE JARRETT - 88 - Quality Care/Ford Credit Taurus - "We know there are race tracks we normally do well at, and we have to be good at these race tracks. We have to get everything figured out for when we go back to these race tracks the second time. We've been pretty fortunate in some cases, and this is important." DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE CONSISTANCY? "Finishwise we've got the consistency. The last hundred miles of a race we've got it, but we've got to get better the first part of the race. I'd say I'm surprised we are leading the points, but I'm not surprised because this is what we've been striving for, that consistency. We haven't had to knock us out of the race other than Daytona, and that's what we need to continue to do. Our lap was faster than we've run, but I'm not surprised at it. We made some adjustments to where I could be really aggressive with the car. It was hung out, but it was fast and that's what we needed. This is much better than we've been qualifying. It's a good race car that we've got here so we're looking forward to Sunday. Goodyear has a good tire here for us, and the people here at Dover have done a really good job of smoothing it out. It makes not only for fast speeds here today, but for good racing on Sunday."

BILL ELLIOTT - 94 - McDonald's Taurus - "That's as good as we've been for a while. These guys have worked hard. We came here and we were just a little off in practice. They jumped in and changed different stuff, and just kept working and working and working. It felt really good in qualifying, really good."

CHAD LITTLE -97- John Deere Taurus - "We were really pretty good. We were just a little tight off of turn two and turn four, but the car has actually been pretty good since we've unloaded so we're pretty pleased with it. We've made very little changes. It's just a matter of whether you nail the lap or miss it a little bit."

RICK MAST -98- Guess Who?!! Taurus - YOU HAVE GUESS WHO ON THE CAR. WHAT'S THE DEAL? "Tune in next week, and you will find out. I've had a lot of fun with this this morning with people trying to figure it out. I can tell you everybody here is real excited. This team is finally going to get some stuff that it needs. It's going to be a pretty good deal. It's a multi-year deal. We slowed down on our lap. I don't have any idea why. I was just a little loose when I picked the gas up in one and two. In three and four we were just about perfect in three and four. I really thought I'd done a 60 because we'd been running 70's pretty consistently. I just don't know why we slowed down. Most of the time you know why, but this time has got me stumped."

JEFF BURTON -99- Exide Batteries Taurus - "We've been terrible since we got here. We put Mark in the car the last practice, and we were just trying to whatever we could do, and he went about a half a tenth quicker than what I did. We made some changes on the car just kind of taking a chance. None of those changes worked. We were actually worse than we've been all day. We'll just have to take a provisional and go on with the race. I can't get it to work. It's real tight in the middle, but then off the corner it's real loose. We haven't found the balance. Some of that's me. I just don't have a good feel for what the car needs to qualify well. When Mark got in it he couldn't pinpoint it either."
