Dover moves ahead with aggressive expansion
DOVER, Del. (Nov. 17, 1998) The final beams have been lifted into place to complete the structural steel work on the first phase of Dover Downs International Speedway's 15,000-seat grandstand expansion for the 1999 season which, when completed, will bring the grandstand capacity of the "Monster Mile" to 122,000, seventh-largest among the 21 tracks holding NASCAR Winston Cup events.
Only the speedways at Indianapolis; Daytona Beach, Fla.; Fort Worth, Texas; Charlotte, N.C.; Atlanta; and Bristol, Tenn. currently seat more patrons, according to information released by Dover Downs. The new seats at the one-mile high-banked concrete oval will expand the upper tier of the South Grandstand, flanking the 1998 addition on both sides.
The deck is currently being installed on the addition to the South Grandstand overlooking turn three, while footings are in place for the corresponding addition in turn four. When completed, the upper tier of the South Grandstand will stretch the height of a 12-story building around the entire south end of the track, raising reserved seating capacity to 122,000.
The latest round of expansion marks the 14th consecutive year that Dover Downs has invested in the future of NASCAR Winston Cup racing by adding permanent seating around the facility. As always, new concession and sanitary facilities have been included in the construction project, and new parking areas have been opened to accommodate the increased attendance.
The new addition to the Monster Mile will make its public debut at the 31st annual MBNA Platinum 400 NASCAR Winston Cup weekend, June 4-6. Practice and qualifying are set for Friday, June 4, with the MBNA Platinum 200 NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division race on Saturday, June 5, and the MBNA Platinum 400 NASCAR Winston Cup classic on Sunday, June 6.
Other major motorsports events at Dover Downs in 1999 are the second annual visit of the Pep Boys Indy Racing League, July 30-August 1; and the MBNA Gold 400 weekend, Sept. 24-26, for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series.
MBNA Platinum 400 tickets are currently on sale to the public, while Pep Boys Indy Racing League and MBNA Gold 400 tickets will go on sale in the near future.
To order tickets, call (800) 441-7223 toll free from outside Delaware, or (302) 734-7223 long distance from anywhere. For recorded information, including updated NASCAR Winston Cup seat availability, call (302) 674-4600, 24 hours a day, or visit the Dover Downs Web site at: www.doverdowns.com.
As they have throughout the Monster Mile's 14 consecutive years of grandstand expansion, E&D Specialty Stands of North Collins, N.Y., will finish their work on the new sections by installing premium chair-back seats, while other contractors are hard at work on the concession stands, rest rooms and elevators which make the new facility convenient and accessible for all race fans.
