Dodge drivers sweep top three spots at Homestead
CASEY ATWOOD (No. 19 Dodge Dealers Dodge Intrepid R/T)
NOTE: Atwood was the fastest qualifying Raybestos of the Year Rookie contender for the 11th time this season. This is the third straight race Atwood has been the highest qualifying rookie. He's started first, third and second in the past three races. This is his best start since he won the pole at Phoenix.
"We had been a little tight in the middle of one and two all day, and it didn't do it in qualifying. I guess that's where I made some of my time up. I think the track may have picked up a little bit, too, after it cooled off. We'll see what happens. That was a pretty good lap. We had been real tight in one and two all day and it turned real good in qualifying and came off the corner good. We picked up the car up a lot, and I think the track picked up a little bit. We'll see where it stacks up."
BUCKSHOT JONES (No. 44 Georgia Pacific Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"That's a lot better than we practiced. We had a problem with the motor in practice. The guys did a good job getting in ready for qualifying. I talked to John and Kyle and they helped us out. That's a lot better than we had run all day."
JOHN ANDRETTI (No. 43 Cheerios Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"I knew when Casey picked up that much everybody else would, too. Everybody has picked up some. It's a brand new car. I'm nervous when I go to any track as far back as we sit in points. As many cars as they get for some of these races, I really get nervous about going home. We unloaded and were the fastest off the truck and then Ricky (Rudd) clipped us. At the end of practice Bill and Casey clipped us. I'm really happy. We've got a great group of guys working on the car. We've just got to get all the other parts and pieces together. I'm hoping we can have a good Sunday, too. We started getting our qualifying back together and actually getting back in the game a little bit. The engine program has really come along, and that's probably helped us the most."
WARD BURTON (No. 22 Caterpillar Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"It looks like the Dodges are qualifying pretty good today. Our Cat team has been working real hard for qualifying, and this was a good run for us. I know the cars have gotten better on the flat tracks, and I think I've gotten better, too. We've both improved. I like banked tracks, but you've got two grooves out there right now, and that's a good thing. I think we'll have a good package Sunday. It's a brand new car. We tested it at Indy, but we haven't race it yet. We came down here and tested and now it's our primary car for Homestead. I think we'll have a good run with it Sunday. We've had some strong runs lately, so hopefully we'll keep it up."
STACY COMPTON (No. 92 Kodiak Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"Our guys made some pretty good calls. It was a good lap for us. We were decent in practice, and we knew we needed to pick up half a second. That's what we did, and that's what we needed to do. We've got a decent starting spot. It's not quite as high up as we hoped. I got loose on the second lap, but we'll take it. Grip and new tires are big here. New tires are worth a couple of tenths. New tires make a load of difference."
JASON LEFFLER (No. 01 Cingular Wireless Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We came here and tested and our team has been working really hard. It's nice to get a good effort in here at qualifying. We haven't really qualified too good this year, but we're starting seventh here, so that's not too bad. The guys are pumped up, and hopefully we'll have a good run on Sunday."
STERLING MARLIN (No. 40 Coors Light Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We never got to make a banzai in practice. We lost an engine in practice. I didn't know it was going to get this cool. We probably should have been a little more aggressive with the shocks. The guys did a good job changing the motor. That's the best this car has ever qualified (two wins and fifth top fives in five starts). This is the car we won Michigan and Charlotte with, so it might be bad to the bone on Sunday. I got loose in four and that cost us a little bit."
DAVE BLANEY (No. 93 Amoco Ultimate Dodge Intrepid R/T)
"We were real loose off the corner. I'd been that way all day. I figured with the temperature change it would fix it, but it didn't. We've got a decent starting spot. It's not as good as some of the other Dodges, but it's still pretty good."
