BRISTOL, Tenn. (March 27, 1998)

Former NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Tour driver Chris Trickle, nephew of NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division driver Dick Trickle, died Wednesday after spending nearly 13 months in a coma. Trickle, who was 25, was shot in the head more than a year ago in Las Vegas.

The following is a statement from Dick Trickle regarding his nephew's passing:

"I grieve for Chris' parents, my brother, Chuck, and his wife, Barbara. They have been through a rough period in their lives since Chris was shot.

"Chris was the most important thing in their lives, and they poured every ounce of their effort into his well-being before and after the shooting.

"Chris had a great future in racing. I am sorry we won't know how far he could have gone in this sport.

"The family has received a tremendous amount of support from the racing community. A lot of people backed Chris throughout his battle, and the family feels extremely fortunate to have that many friends. I would like to thank everyone who sent a card, said a prayer or made a donation."

Funeral and memorial arrangements for Chris Trickle have not yet been made.
