Sparta, Ky. - Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) prepared for a strong close to the 2001 Winston Cup season by testing a pair of NASCAR Winston Cup cars at Kentucky Speedway on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
Daytona 500 Champion Michael Waltrip, in the No. 15 NAPA Chevrolet, and Kenny Wallace, in the No. 1 Pennzoil Chevrolet, rarely left their driver's seats while working over their machines on Kentucky's 1.5 mile tri-oval during the day-long test. "We're trying to find out some things, " a busy Wallace said.
DEI hopes its current autumn tests generate similar results as they did one year ago. Kevin Harvick, driver of DEI's NASCAR Busch Series No. 2 AC Delco Chevrolet and No. 29 GM Goodwrench Service Winston Cup Chevrolet, attributed his win in Kentucky's inaugural Busch Series "Outback Steakhouse 300" last season's fall tests at the track.
"I think that all of the testing we did last year at the track (Kentucky Speedway) really came into play tonight. It was pretty awesome to come back here and get in Victory Lane," Harvick said following the June 15, 2001 event that was staged in front of a standing-room-only crowd of 70,388.
