Riggs, Team Valvoline Continue Strong Performance

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2005) -- A strong effort by Scott Riggs in Thursday's 150-mile qualifying race lifted the Valvoline driver to a 12th place starting position for Sunday's Daytona 500.

After an early tire rub and a close call on the track, Riggs, who started the 60-lap race fourth, fell back through the field twice before propelling to a fifth-place finish in the second of two Gatorade Duels.

"It sure is fun when you have a good car," said Riggs, who's been consistently fast throughout Speedweeks. "This is a great finish for the Valvoline team. It really shows what a great car the guys have put together when you can go from the back to the front twice and come up with a fifth place finish.

"We had a tire rub early and then managed to avoid the big one, but both times we found ourselves battling back through the field and that's when you know you've got an awesome machine under you."

Riggs fell as low as 22nd in the 28-car field before finding his way back to the top five.

"This is probably the best superspeedway car I've ever had," he continued. "I got a little frustrated at times out there cause I felt like no one would work with me. Hopefully after people saw what a good car I had today, they'll be more willing to back me up in the 500. I think we've proven that we've got a car that can go to the front."
