Jimmy Spencer Finishes 21st in Gatorade 125 Race
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 15, 2002)– The Target Dodge Intrepid R/T driven by Jimmy Spencer finished 21st in the second Gatorade 125 qualifying race Shootout at Daytona International Speedway.
Jimmy Spencer, driver of the No. 41 Target Dodge Intrepid R/T, ran a fast lap of 49.681 seconds (181.156 mph), placing him 44th fastest among the qualifiers. Due to the even-numbered qualifying result, Team Target was placed in the second Gatorade 125 qualifying race and started in 22nd position.
Spencer moved up through the pack and made it to 18th position before he was involved in a multiple-car accident on lap 9. Team Target worked on the No. 41 Dodge during five pit stops to get Spencer back out in the race. On lap 27, a right front tire went down on the No. 41 Dodge and Spencer had major damage on the right side of his Dodge. Spencer finished the Gatorade 125 Qualifying race in 21st position, 22 laps down. Due to the poor finish and low 2001 car owner points, the No. 41 Target Dodge did not make the Daytona 500.
“ It’s a long year,” Spencer said after knowing he did not make the Daytona 500. “ I knew coming in we could go home for the 500, but it’s one of them deals. Our car wasn’t fast enough to go on speed. Our next option was going to Thursday’s race. I knew we had to have a top-15. When you have two accidents like this, it’s not like Days of Thunder. We knew our car wasn’t going to be fast enough to make it in second-round qualifying, so we kept working on our race setup. There’s just nothing you can do when you get hit from behind. It’s water under the bridge and I still think we can be in the top-10 in points.”
Next on the schedule for the No. 41 Target team is the North Carolina 400 at North Carolina Speedway.
