Jarrett, Marcis wrap up Daytona tire test
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 24, 1998) Two-time Daytona 500 champion Dale Jarrett and Dave Marcis, substituting for Dale Earnhardt in the No. 3 GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet, concluded a two-day tire test conducted by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway. The test was in preparation for next February's 41st running of the "Great American Race."
"We usually always test before the next year's Daytona 500 in the fall," said William Hodges, Goodyear race tire technician, "just because the Daytona 500 is so important and because of the strong emphasis that these teams put on that race. These race teams put forward a solid two months of effort into getting ready for the Daytona 500 and there's no reason why we shouldn't put forward that same kind of effort.
"Over the last two days, we've tried multiple compounds and different constructions and we feel we've got a good handle on how the race track has changed over the past year. We must make sure we have enough grip for these cars. It is critical that the car feels comfortable to drive, especially at a place like Daytona where the drivers draft in such large groups."
The next scheduled event at the speedway is the Oct. 17 NASCAR Winston Cup Series Pepsi 400 race. The highly-anticipated first nighttime running of the Pepsi 400 will be preceded by two nights of practice and qualifying on Oct. 15-16. Although all tickets for the Pepsi 400 have been sold, tickets for Bud Pole Qualifying are still available. For ticket information regarding Pepsi 400 Bud Pole Night or next year's Speedweeks 1999 activities call (904) 253-7223.
