Lepage leads as Daytona test wraps up

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 17, 1998) Roush Racing's Kevin Lepage, driving the Primestar Ford Taurus, recorded the quickest lap of a two-day session at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the Oct. 17 Pepsi 400. Wednesday's session was cut short due to rain showers, but not before all five drivers participating in the night test topped 188 mph at some point during the two days. Lepage's lap at 188.996 mph bested those of Roush teammates Johnny Benson (188.600) and Jeff Burton (188.245). Fourth-quickest on Wednesday was Rick Mast at 187.852 mph with Michael Waltrip clocking in at 187.500. Both Lepage and Benson recorded their fastest laps on the second day of the test, while Burton, Mast and Waltrip posted their fastest speeds on Tuesday. The July 4 Pepsi 400 and related activities were postponed to Oct. 15-17 at the "World Center of Racing" due to wildfires in the Volusia County area. The much-anticipated 40th Pepsi 400, will be preceded on Oct. 15-16 by practice and Bud Pole Qualifying. Although all tickets for the Pepsi 400 race have been sold, tickets for Bud Pole Qualifying are still available by calling the Speedway ticket office at 904-253-7223.
