Notes Before the Green Flag:
-- There hasn't been too much good luck lately on the race track for the No. 8 Budweiser team and driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. However, that may change this evening as Dale Jr. carries a special good luck charm in his race car. Jordan Sorozan, a 16-year old from New Jersey with Spina Bifoda, presented Dale Jr. with a special No. 8 Beanie Bear that she has used as her own personal good luck charm. Jordan spoke with Dale Jr. Friday afternoon in a meeting arranged by the Make-A-Wish foundation.
"This bear has helped me through two surgeries and it has brought me good luck, so I want you to carry it in your car in the race," she told Junior. Jordan and her family will watch tonight's race from a luxury suite high above the Daytona International Speedway.
--- The Bud car will start ninth this evening, the team's best-ever starting position in this nighttime event. The team won the 400 last year after starting 13th. Dale Jr's DEI teammates Michael Waltrip and Steve Park will start seventh and eighth. Kevin Harvick won the Bud Pole, making him the newest addition to the starting lineup for the 2003 Budweiser Shootout at Daytona.
--- Dale Jr. will fly to Milwaukee Sunday to participate in a variety of activities surrounding the 2002 Major League Baseball All-Star game. In honor of the game (and Budweiser's status as the official beer of both MLB and NASCAR), the No. 8 Bud car will carry a special MLB All-Star paint scheme in tonight's race. Because of testing commitments in Indianapolis, Junior is not able to attend Tuesday night's tilt, but will participate in an All-Star celebrity softball game Sunday evening, take batting practice on the field, and participate in an autograph session Monday afternoon at the "Bud World" display at the park.
Dale Jr. will also host the All-Star edition of "This Week in Baseball," the MLB-produced weekly highlight show. The show airs Saturdays on Fox at 12:30 ET/PT.
