Jarrett records fastest speed as Ford teams open Daytona testing

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 3, 1997) -- Dale Jarrett, the defending Busch Clash and Daytona 500 winner, posted the fastest time of nine Ford NASCAR Winston Cup stock car teams that opened a pre-season test session Friday at Daytona International Speedway in preparation for the Feb. 16 Daytona 500. Jarrett, the 1993 and 1996 Daytona 500 winner, was clocked at 48.169 seconds, an average speed of 186.842 mph, in one of three Robert Yates Racing Ford Thunderbirds on hand. Ernie Irvan drove the other two Yates cars and clocked a best lap of 185.090 mph. Other fast laps Friday were recorded by Jeremy Mayfield, 186.023 mph, John Andretti at 185.280 and Lake Speed, 185.189. The test continues Saturday. A section of the Oldfield Grandstand is open daily at no charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access through the DAYTONA USA lobby.
