Jarrett records fastest speed on second day of Ford testing at Daytona

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 4) -- Dale Jarrett continued his torrid pace in pre-Speedweeks NASCAR Winston Cup stock car testing Saturday as he posted the fastest lap for the second straight day among 10 Ford teams at Daytona International Speedway, in preparation for the Feb. 16 Daytona 500. Jarrett, the defending Busch Clash and Daytona 500 champion, turned a lap of the 2.5-mile trioval in 48.059 seconds, an average speed of 187.270 mph, in his Robert Yates Racing Ford Thunderbird. The car was the piece the team built after Jarrett's Daytona 500-winner was enshrined in DAYTONA USA's Gatorade Victory Lane. John Andretti turned the second-quickest lap of the day, 186.463 mph, in the Yarborough Motorsports T-bird, with Ernie Irvan (186.154), Lake Speed (185.931) and Dick Trickle (185.319) rounding-out the top five. The Ford test concludes Sunday. No fewer than 14 General Motors NASCAR Winston Cup teams are expected Monday to begin a three-day test, including those of two-time Daytona 500 winner Sterling Marlin, defending NASCAR Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte, Dale Earnhardt, Jeff Gordon and Darrell Waltrip. A section of the Oldfield Grandstand is open daily at no charge from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with access through DAYTONA USA. Guided Speedway tours are also available from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
