FAST QUALIFYING RUN ASSURES ELLIOTT SPOT IN DAYTONA 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2006) -- Bill Elliott, driving the No. 36 Ginn Clubs & Resorts Chevrolet for MB2 Motorsports, recorded the ninth fastest speed in Sunday's Pole Day qualifying at Daytona International Speedway.

Elliott's covered the 2.5-mile tri-oval in 47.945 seconds at 187.715 miles per hour.

A two-time winner of NASCAR's biggest race, Elliott was the fastest among the 23 drivers who were not automatically locked into the 500 based on 2005 owner points. Sunday's performance assured Elliott a starting berth in the Feb. 19 Daytona 500, no matter where he finishes in Thursday's (Feb. 16) 150-mile qualifying race.

Sunday's Pole Day competition locked in the front row for the 500 and set the fields for Thursday's qualifying races. The results of Thursday's twin races will set the lineup for the Daytona 500, starting with the third position. (Note: Thursday's lineup will be announced by NASCAR later today)

"Once again, it's one step at a time," said Elliott. "One goal has been accomplished and that's getting into next Sunday's big show. We made a good run today and the credit goes to the guys. This track is all about the car. Our next goal is to make the Ginn Clubs & Resorts Chevy fast in the drafting mode."

Thursday's twin qualifying races will be televised on TNT, beginning at 2 p.m. ET.
