Valvoline Team looks ahead to race trim conditions.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2004) -- Scott Riggs posted the 29th fastest time in Sunday's Daytona 500 pole qualifying.

Facing strong winds on the backstretch at Daytona International Speedway, Riggs rounded the 2.5-mile tri-oval in 48.284 seconds at 186.397 miles per hour.

"The wind was blowing straight at me on the backstretch," Riggs commented. "The car felt better high against the wall, so I stayed up there.

"Now that qualifying is over, our main focus will be getting the Valvoline Chevrolet in race trim and ready to draft well for the 125-mile race so we can get a good starting spot for the 500."

Sunday's qualifying laps locked in only the top-two starting spots for the Daytona 500, scheduled for Feb. 15.

The majority of the Daytona 500 starting field will be determined in Thursday's (Feb. 12) Twin 125-mile qualifying races.(see below)

Riggs will compete in the first race, which is reserved for cars that qualified in odd positions during Sunday's pole qualifying. The second will consist of cars that qualified in even positions.

Riggs, who will start 15th in the 125 qualifying race, is one of six rookies competing in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series.

Thursday's races will be televised on TNT, beginning at 1 p.m. EST.
