Mayfield Qualifies 43rd at Daytona International Speedway; Will Line up 21st in Second Duel Race on Thursday
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8, 2009) -- This afternoon, Jeremy Mayfield and the No. 41 ALL SPORT Toyota Camry team completed the first round of qualifying competition at Daytona International Speedway. Mayfield, debuting his full-time Mayfield Motorsports entry, rounded the 2.5-mile superspeedway in 48.627 seconds positioning the veteran driver in 43rd place overall.
"Honestly, I'm really proud of this ALL SPORT team no matter where we end up today," said Mayfield. "All this came together in the last few weeks and I'm proud of this team and what we've accomplished so far. We knew that we'd face challenges early on, with putting this deal together, but we also knew that we were in this for the long haul so we'll just have to race our way into the 500."
Mayfield will line up 21st in the second of two qualifying events. He will compete against 10 other non top-35 teams for two transfer positions into the 51st annual Daytona 500.
"We hoped we had a chance of qualifying on speed but we also considered this situation and honestly, we're ready for it," reasoned Mayfield. "We've already discussed our plan and we're prepared for Thursday's Duels.
"This team can do it. I have all the faith in world in these guys to pull it off because we're doing it with heart. At the end of the day, we're here to race and to make a difference in this sport by proving that a few guys with the simple desire to race can come here and put on a great show."
The ALL SPORT sponsored Mayfield Motorsports entry will compete in the second Daytona Duel.
