NASCAR legend Darrell Waltrip named Lifetime Achievement winner for the 4th Annual O'Charley's Dinner of Champions

Nashville's Premier Sports Awards Event set for February 7, 2002 at Gaylord Opryland Hotel Nashville, TN., January 18, 2002 - Representatives at the Nashville Sports Council announced today that Darrell Waltrip will be named the Lifetime Achievement Award Winner during the 4th Annual O'Charley's Dinner of Champions, set for February 7, 2002 at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel.

"Darrell's accomplishments in NASCAR and auto-racing are incredible and we are excited to honor him at the event this year", said Butch Spyridon, chairman of the event.

Waltrip has 84 NASCAR Winston Cup victories to his credit along with 37 Superspeedway victories. Waltrip's career began at the age of 12 driving go-carts and he entered his first stock car race four years later. Waltrip's first Winston Cup start was in 1972 and he has gone on to be one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport.

"I owe a lot to the sport of racing and I am honored to receive this award. I was at the event last year and look forward to being there once again", said Waltrip.

Past recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award have included former legendary sports writer Fred Russell, TSU and Olympic Track Coach Ed Temple, and Metro Parks Director Jim Fyke. Nashville sports fans had the opportunity to nominate their favorites in the following categories for the 4th Annual O'Charley's Dinner of Champions: Sports Person of the Year, Lifetime Achievement, Courage, Community Spirit, Amateur Athletics and Middle Tennessee's Top Ten Moments of 2001.
