DARLINGTON, S.C. (March 21, 1998) Kenny Wallace was the fastest of 13 drivers who participated in Bud Beer Second-Round Qualifying for the TranSouth Financial 400 at Darlington Raceway, and the driver of the Square D Ford posted the second-fastest overall speed in two days of qualifying.
Wallace, youngest of the racing Wallace brothers, was clocked at 168.301 mph. Had he turned in that speed in the first round of Bud Pole Qualifying on Friday, March 20, he would have earned a front-row starting position, alongside Bud Pole winner Mark Martin.
As it is, Wallace will occupy the 26th starting position since the top 25 spots were locked in after the first round.
The second-fastest speed of the second round was posted by Dale Earnhardt in the GM Goodwrench Service Plus Chevrolet. Earnhardt took the 27th starting position with his speed of 167.231 mph.
Another driver who participated in the second round, earned spot No. 28. Joe Nemechek was clocked at 167.129 mph in the BellSouth Chevrolet.
Two other drivers who made second-day runs snapped up positions 29 and 30. Chad Little, in the John Deere Ford, was clocked at 166.930 mph while Bill Elliott, in the McDonald's Ford, turned in a speed of 166.687 mph.
Positions 31-36 went to Derrike Cope, Ken Schrader, Terry Labonte, Lake Speed and Steve Grissom, all of whom stood on the speeds they posted in the first round.
Provisional starts, in order, were given to Jeremy Mayfield, Bobby Hamilton, Ernie Irvan, Kyle Petty, Todd Bodine and Jeff Green. Darrell Waltrip will start 43rd with a past champion's provisonal.
Failing to make the TranSouth Financial 400 field were Wally Dallenbach, Dave Marcis, Hut Stricklin, Ron Hornaday, Gary Bradberry and Morgan Shepherd.
