RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus (Finished 41st) "As the leader of the race, Steve has got to make good decisions and I think the decision to pass where he passed was questionable, but I also think Stacy needs to give consideration to the leader.
RICKY CRAVEN --32-- Tide Taurus (Finished 41st)
"As the leader of the race, Steve has got to make good decisions and I think the decision to pass where he passed was questionable, but I also think Stacy needs to give consideration to the leader. I'm not gonna dismiss it as one of those racing deals because it didn't need to happen and it took the Tide Ford out of the race. I'm not gonna sit here and say it was anybody's fault because Darlington is a tough old place to race."
DALE JARRETT --88-- UPS Taurus (Finished 40th)
"There was nothing anybody could do about this one. Apparently a piece of debris or a rock or something got up in the oil pump belt and shredded it. I felt the engine tightening up when I came off of two and when I looked down I didn't have any oil pressure. There's nothing you can put the blame on except bad racing luck. Hopefully, that will turn around soon."
BRETT BODINE --11-- Hooters Taurus (Finished 38th)
"The 97 spun. I don't know if he was trying to get to pit road or what happened there, but I was on fresh tires and fresh tires are so much faster than everybody else. I got in there and when he spun I saw him go low. Hut was behind him and he really had to check up because he didn't know where the 97 was going and I just got in the back of Hut real hard. I really should have slowed down a little bit more, but I had those fresh tires on and was trying to make time so it was just unfortunate. When I came through the smoke, there was Hut and it was too late to get stopped. I hit him pretty hard. I hope it didn't mess his car up because I was just trying to get through there without people running over the back of me and, unfortunately, I ran over the back of somebody else."
ELLIOTT SADLER --21-- Motorcraft Taurus (Finished 2nd)
"I just got a little bit loose there at the end and Sterling and those guys got their stuff together. I tried him, but this Motorcraft Ford Taurus was very good. This is the best I've ever run at Darlington. I've got to thank Dale, Jr. for letting me go there at the end to try and make a run for the win, but it was a good day. I'm happy for these guys. We had great pit stops all day and this is exactly what we needed."
YOU HAVE A GOOD FEELING? "That's a real good feeling. I think the Wood Brothers have been to victory lane eight times here, but he was tough. Sterling and those guys had their stuff together on long runs and I knew that. I tried to catch him, but I kept getting looser and looser and I was afraid if I kept burning up my right-rear I would be even worse, but I'm proud of these guys. I'm proud of this Motorcraft Ford Taurus team, U.S. Air Force, Coke, everybody involved. We had great pit stops, great calls, it was a fun day."
HOW WAS IT TODAY? "That was pretty cool right there. To run up front all day like that and then to get a lap down and not have the guys give up on me, we had great pit stops all day. This Motorcraft Ford Taurus was pretty good. The owner made a decision Thursday morning before we left to come here, we switched cars. This was not the car we were gonna bring, but those guys decided to bring it here and it paid off. We had a great finish. We really needed this. We had a really good car at Atlanta and a really good car at Vegas, but the cautions killed us there. I thought the caution was gonna kill us again today. As soon as we pitted the caution came out, but the guys did not give up. Dale, Jr. and I worked really good on the restart and right there at the end of the race, so I've got to thank him a lot for today's good finish."
ARE YOU STARTING TO PULL IT TOGETHER? "I hope so. This is a stretch of three good race tracks. We love it here, we love Bristol and we love Texas, so this is a fortune of good things to come. This is great momentum going into to Bristol, a place we think we can really win the race at, so this is the momentum we need for that race track."
RUSTY WALLACE --2-- Miller Lite Taurus (Finished 7th)
DID GETTING THROUGH THE BIG WRECK REALLY HELP YOU? "Well, it certainly didn't hurt me because we were able to gain some positions, but I had a really fast race car the second half of the race. At the beginning I was so loose I couldn't touch the gas pedal. We kept making really big adjustments and finally got it a lot tighter, but I still have to come here with a better setup. This place has got me screwed up when it comes to my setup, but I'm getting better at it. Overall though I'm really happy with the way it turned out. It turned out real good."
MATT KENSETH --17-- DEWALT Power Tools Taurus (Finished 8th)
"We actually ran pretty poorly. Our car didn't handle as good as we hoped it would, but through attrition and great pit stops we got up and got a top 10 out of it. I'm real thankful to get a top-10 out of it because we missed the setup today pretty bad."
HOW DID THE WRECK EFFECT YOUR OUTCOME? "You always hate to see wrecks, but everybody that was probably on the lead lap that got in that wreck would have probably beaten us. Most of those guys were running ahead of us at the time of the wreck, so you never know. You never know what's gonna happen in one of these things until they're over, but I'm real happy to get out of here eighth and have some luck on our side. We thought it was bad luck by coming into the pits and losing our lap, but after the wreck happened it was probably good luck we pitted that time. I felt like we had a top-15 car and we came home eighth, so that was great."
MARK MARTIN --6-- Viagra Taurus (Finished 29th)
"That was really unfortunate because we had a lot better car than we thought. We had a top five car and we fought all day until we finally got up there. We had an excellent race car, but the team did what they needed to do to recover. That 29th-place finish could have been a lot worse than that, but they did what they needed to do. The good thing is that was something we couldn't control. The bad thing is you can't have very many of those if you want to contend, but the good news was we didn't make any mistakes."
WHAT DID YOU SEE AS FAR AS THE ACCIDENT? "Smoke. There was nothing you could do."
RYAN NEWMAN --12-- ALLTEL Taurus -- RAYBESTOS ROOKIE (Finished 5th)
"Finishing in the top five today with the ALLTEL Ford was a great feat considering we had to go to a backup car after yesterday's accident. The pit stops were awesome all day. We got caught a lap down there, but they did an awesome job of getting me out and getting track position so we could come back and finish in the top five."
WHAT ABOUT ANOTHER TOP FIVE. "I had a heck of a time holding Jimmie (Johnson) off at the end, but it was just a great run for the ALLTEL Ford, especially coming in with a backup car. To finish in the top five says a lot about the team and the preparation we have. It was an awesome day for us. To come here and not hit the wall once, that was a big change from yesterday. The guys did an awesome job in the pits, the pit stops were great. We got a break when we got a lap down in the pits. We got that back, so there were a lot of pros and cons the whole day."
DID YOU RACE THE TRACK? "I raced the race track and then I raced the mirror most of the time trying to hold Jimmie off there at the end."
WHAT ABOUT YOUR DAY? "We had a great qualifying run on Friday, but we cut a left-rear tire down in practice and I got loose and got it up in the wall. We had to go to a backup car for raceday here, but it just says a lot about this team to bring a brand new race car off the truck with no time on the race track at all. The first lap this car ever turned was the first lap of the race. It was just an awesome day for us on the ALLTEL Ford and there are a lot of good things we can take out of this."
JOE NEMECHEK --26-- Haas Carter Motorsports Taurus (Finished 17th) -- "Man, it was tough to get a hold of this thing. We fought this same condition all weekend where the car was really tight getting into the turns and then the rear end would want to kick out when we were exiting. I really had to get a hold of the car when we hit the bumps. It was a heck of a ride, but we're gaining on things. I'm happy with a 17th-place finish because that's our highest finish so far, so we'll take it and head to Bristol."
RICKY RUDD --28-- Havoline Taurus (Finished 12th)
"We really got everything we had out of it today. I never could get a hold of the track. My guys kept working all day long and we got about the best finish we could out of it."
KURT BUSCH --97-- Rubbermaid Taurus (Finished 28th)
"We had another great run going this weekend. Our Rubbermaid Taurus was certainly a top-10 car, but that accident late in the race caused us to finish 28th. The crew did an incredible job of getting us back on the track in a hurry, but, unfortunately, we couldn't regain what we lost."
JEFF BURTON --99-- Citgo Taurus (Finished 11th)
"I'm really disappointed. We came here and tested and had a good test, but we sure didn't race very well. We didn't run well, but we got lucky to finish where we finished."
