DARLINGTON, S.C. (Aug. 20, 1998) Dale Jarrett was a man on a mission the past two days at Darlington Raceway, finalizing his preparations for the Labor Day weekend classic Pepsi Southern 500, and when he left the track Wednesday afternoon, he was a confident individual.
"We came, we tested and we conquered, so to speak," said Jarrett, who was also joined by fellow driver Mike Wallace. "This was two great days of trying new and different things on the car. We learned a lot. We're going to be really good when we come back.
"Anytime you can walk away from Darlington with a good feeling, you've accomplished something. We've really been successful here lately, but we're still trying to find that little edge to make us better than the others. We found some things that we feel will be beneficial when we come back. I'm smiling."
On Tuesday, Jarrett, who has won the last two spring TranSouth Financial 400 races at Darlington, concentrated solely on a qualifying setup for the historical race while Wednesday was devoted to fine tuning race setup. The biggest reason for the test, however, is he really wants to win his first Pepsi Southern 500.
"It's the race I've always wanted to win ever since my dad (Ned Jarrett) did it in 1965," added Dale, who finished third in last year's race. Jarrett's best lap Wednesday was 162.834 mph, "but that's just race set-up. That's not a qualifying run," said Jarrett, who will also compete in the Dura-Lube 200 Presented by Bi-Lo NASCAR Busch Series race (Saturday, Sept. 5). Wallace was quickest of the two at 163.266 mph.
Jarrett will be out to stop the fivesome of Dale Earnhardt, Mike Skinner, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Gordon from winning the $1 million Winston No Bull 5 Bonus.
Testing resumes next week with Skinner, Martin, Labonte and Jeff Burton scheduled to test. For ticket information, call the Raceway at (843) 395-8499. Source: NASCAR Online
